Discover the Wonders of the Peak at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery

If you are inspired by the amazing landscape of the Derbyshire Peak District, then a visit to Buxton Museum and Art Gallery will take you back through time visiting your favourite places. Over 1200 objects tell the Peak District’s story, about the Georgians benefitting from Buxton’s spa waters; Romans who invaded; and people from deep history who made tools and pots and first worked lead. Even further back in time, meet cave lions and bears that roamed the plains, scimitar tooth cats which hunted elephants and even before that, long, long before that, sharks that swam in the tropical seas full of shelly creatures.

While you are here, enjoy our programme of exhibitions by artists inspired by the Peak District. Bring the children to meet Buxton’s Bear. There is loads to do with family room specially for under families visiting with children under 5, an art cart full of resources, quiz trails and a microscope to discover the world in miniature.

Admission is free but donations are gratefully received.
