Aln Valley Railway
Alnwick's award winning heritage transport attraction.
The Aln Valley Railway is situated in Alnwick, just off the A1. You can enjoy a ride behind one of our steam engines, heritage diesel engines or on one of our Diesel Multiple Units whilst taking in the views of Northumberland.
10 years ago the railway was fortunate to secure a site on Lionheart Industrial Estate and since then has built a railway which currently runs around halfway to Alnmouth from Alnwick, to our new Greenrigg Halt. The project is still very much in full swing and we have recently completed phase 1 repairs to Cawledge Viaduct, the viaduct we travel over on our way to Greenrigg.
Whilst at the railway you can enjoy a bite to eat in our café. It is hoped the café will be revamped in 2022 offering a great selection of both hot and cold food. The children can run off their own steam in our play area. We also have a museum and model railway on site (these are open subject to volunteer availability). New for 2022 we will have a miniature railway running for both adults and children alike to enjoy! Last but not least, you can join us for a steam or diesel hauled train ride in our heritage compartmental coaches or on board our Pacer diesel multiple unit. Please check the timetable to see which traction is scheduled to run on the day (whilst we will endeavour to keep to the scheduled traction where possible, it may occasionally be necessary to substitute a locomotive at short notice).
Throughout the year the railway hosts a wide range of 'Special Events' such as our Easter Bunny Weekend, Halloween Events and Santa Special Trains. Be sure to visit us in 2022 for our Vintage and Classic Vehicle Weekend (18th/19th June), Model Railway Show (3rd/4th September) and our Christmas Fair (27th November).
Ample free parking is also available on site.
